“BE CRIME SMART” LINKS

International Fraudulent Schemes and Crimes via the Internet continue to pose a challenge to police agencies in every community. Because these fraudulent schemes originate from foreign countries, jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute them rests with federal authorities. In certain instances, the Frederick Police Department conducts cooperative investigations with its federal partners, most frequently the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Citizens who receive solicitations from neighboring countries that are fraudulent schemes may file a complaint over the internet at www.ic3.gov.  This “Internet Crime Complaint Center” webpage links the complainant to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center.

Many citizens also are concerned about predators who acquaint themselves with children via online “chat rooms,” as well as other “peer to peer” internet activities.  By going to www.fbi.gov/becrimesmart.htm citizens have access to the most current information available.

The Frederick Police Department will individually assist any citizen who requires additional information.  The Criminal Investigation may be reached at 301-600-2126.
