Legal Department


The City of Frederick’s Legal Department is charged with (1) providing legal advice to the Mayor, Board of Aldermen, City staff, and administrative agencies; (2) litigating suits to which the City is a party; (3) preparing ordinances and resolutions for introduction to the Board of Aldermen; and (4) preparing or approving for legal sufficiency all contracts and other documents to be signed by the Mayor.

This office responds to the legal needs of the City government and supports the Mayor and City staff in the implementation of policies and procedures. Because of the nature of the City Attorney’s role, we cannot represent or provide legal advice to individual citizens, groups, etc. We are therefore unable to respond to individual requests for legal advice or representation.

The Legal Department is comprised of the City Attorney, 2 assistant City attorneys, a legislative clerk, a legal assistant and an administrative assistant. Our offices are located on the second floor of City Hall, 101 N. Court Street, Frederick, Maryland.
