SpiresGIS Police Crime Map Information
What Crimes are shown on the Map?
The Spires crime data map uses the Frederick Police Department’s official crime statistics, which are based on the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) guidelines. In most cases, these guidelines require that all events interpreted as “attempts” also be included in the summary statistics. Therefore, the public should be cognizant that a UCR category not only includes overt or observable crimes, but also those events that could be interpreted as attempted crimes.
Depicted here are offenses or incidents reported to the Frederick Police Department in which an officer writes a report that is then reviewed and classified by a FPD records specialist.
The public should also be cognizant that the Spires software crime map only shows more than one crime event on a particular coordinate through the use of the identify tool.
The SpiresGIS crime map does NOT show calls for service.
Depicted are Part One Offenses for the previous month and year to date, updated every month.

How do the Crimes get on the Map?
Crime information is gathered, classified and then forwarded by the City Police Department. Each record contains an x and y coordinate generated by the county’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. Those coordinates are then used to map out the offenses using a computerized Geographical Information System (GIS).
How Do I get Started?
The Spires software offers multiple ways of viewing crimes information on the map. You can either select a neighborhood from either dropdown list on the left. You can search for your address and then zoom to it using the “Find Address” tool in the bottom right corner of the screen. Otherwise, you can use the zoom tool to zoom in or out on a particular area of the city.
