Intern
Program
Summary of Program:
An internship in municipal government provides an exciting educational experience and a behind the scenes look at how local government works. The City of Frederick is small enough to provide interns with a hands-on experience working with the Mayor and her staff. At the same time, because it is the second largest city in the State of Maryland and still rapidly growing, an internship with the City can offer ample interaction and experience with municipal legislative process. All internships are unpaid.
City Departments:
In addition to internships in the Mayor’s office, there are also opportunities to work in many other City departments. Some opportunities include internships in the Office of Legal Affairs, Engineering, Planning, Finance, Public Information Office, Information Technology, and the Department of Public Works.
Summer Program:
The summer intern program requires a minimum commitment of 24 hours per week.
Year Round Program:
This program is more flexible and can be designed around an individual’s schedule. It can last an entire year or only for the period of a college break. School and work schedules can usually be accommodated.
Application:
To apply for an internship position, print and complete the application that follows. Send it along with a resume (if available) and a 1-2 page essay explaining why you would like an internship. Please include the names, addresses, and phone numbers of three references.
An interview may be required as part of the process. It is recommended that you return your completed application as soon as possible. If you have questions, please contact the Human Resources Department at 301.694.1879.
Deadlines:
Although we try to be flexible, the following are “targeted deadlines” for applications:
Summer Session: April 19
Fall Session: August 15
Spring Session: January 31
