COUNTY TO SPONSOR TRANSPORTATION SUMMIT
_______________________________________________________________________
Frederick, MD -- The Frederick Board of County Commissioners is sponsoring a four-state I-270 Transportation Summit on Saturday, June 16, at Governor Thomas Johnson High School from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The summit will bring together government officials, legislators and private organizations to raise awareness of regional traffic and travel problems. City of Frederick residents are encouraged to attend.
Earlier this year, Commissioner Charles Jenkins and City of Frederick Alderman C. Paul Smith conceived of the need for a regional transportation meeting that would include representatives from Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, because residents of these states rely on I-270 for their commutes to and from work.
“Frederick County is the site of serious regional traffic problems and there are limited funds available to solve them. Therefore, it is important for all affected parties in the region to work together to alleviate the congestion on the I-270 corridor,” said Alderman Smith.
“Transportation issues are of high priority for our region. We need relief from Montgomery County to Frederick County and points north and south. With more development planned along the I-270 corridor, there will be increased strain on our already overcrowded roads. Due to the extent of this situation, no local government can solve the problems alone without increased state support, and most importantly, federal assistance. This informational summit will bring together regional decision-makers to consider workable solutions to the difficulties we face on a daily basis,” said Commissioner Jenkins.
Speakers at the Transportation Summit include project managers with Frederick County Planning Division, State Highway Administration and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
