THE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES IS PROUD TO PRESENT RAILROAD EARTH
IN BAKER PARK ON JULY 1, 2007
The Summer Concert Series Committee of Celebrate Frederick, Inc. presents the new grass sounds of Railroad Earth on July 1 as part of the 2007 Summer Concert Series in Baker Park. The free concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Baker Park Bandshell, Frederick, Md.
Celebrating their sixth season, Railroad Earth has just returned from their Spring Tour and is gearing up for a summer of touring and shows all over the U.S., including a show in Japan! This will be their second appearance in Baker Park as part of the Summer Concert Series. The band received such a tremendous response as part of the 2006 Series, the Summer Concert Series Committee decided to bring them back for one more outstanding show!
Not wanting to be pigeon-holed into a music label, Railroad Earth combines traditional bluegrass, blues and country sounds with the liberal use of drums and amplifiers, unique acoustic instruments and has a souped-up string band sound. The band can jam with the best of the best and were recently joined by Grateful Dead bass player Phil Lesh, who learned to play some of the Railroad Earth’s repertoire, “blowing the group’s collective mind.”
Band members include lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist Todd Shaeffer, vocalist and violinist Tim Carbone. John Skehan on the mandolin and vocals, Andy Goessling playing acoustic guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophone and vocals. Rounding out the band are Carey Harmon on drums and vocals and Johnny Grubb on upright bass. The instrumentation alone urges all to check out their sound.
Prepare to arrive early with your blanket or lawn chair to enjoy a free Carillon performance in Baker Park beginning at 6:00 p.m. Food will be available from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. during the Summer Concert Series performance.
The Carillon performance for July 1 will be given by James Winston Smith, Mercersburg, Pa.
James Winston Smith served as the Music Director for 36 years at the Mercersburg Academy, a four-year, independent boarding school in Pennsylvania. While Director, Smith founded and conducted the Mercersburg Chorale and the Women’s Ensemble, an award winning group of select women. He continues to serve as the school’s resident carillonneur, a position he has held since 1983. For the past several years, Smith has made annual guest appearances at the Netherlands Carillon in Arlington, VA and here at Baker Park.
While the concerts are FREE to the public, the Summer Concert Series Committee encourages you to bring a canned food item in lieu of admission. Non-perishable items such as canned meats and vegetables, soups, peanut butter, cereal, rice and pastas are requested. All items collected benefit the Frederick City Community Action Agency Food Bank. Items will be collected at the Drees Homes Information Booth, located at the top of the bandshell steps in Baker Park.
In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Weinberg Center for the Arts on 20 West Patrick Street, Frederick, Md.
