FEMA TO FINALIZE FLOOD INSURANCE STUDY AND RATE MAP

Frederick, MD --- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has informed the City of Frederick that it will be finalizing the revised Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report and Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for the City of Frederick in September 2007. This will allow the resolution of several issues for citizens, most of which are related to residential flood insurance and property development.

In August 2006, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released preliminary copies of a Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report and Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for the City of Frederick. The flood study was updated because of the level of development in the area over the past several years as well as revisions to the hydrologic models used in developing the floods. This resulted in revised elevations for the “base flood”, which is used as the basis for floodplain management measures in the City of Frederick. The base flood event, commonly referred to as The 100 Year Flood, has a one percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year.

For additional information, please contact Thomas Davis, P.E, Manager of Utilities Planning, Department of Engineering, at 301.600.1798 or thdavis@cityoffrederick.com. Floodmapping can also be viewed by visiting SpiresGIS at the City of Frederick website, www.cityoffrederick.com.
