CITY OF FREDERICK PREPARES RESIDENTS FOR SNOWFALL

 

Frederick, Md. --- With snow predictions in our weather forecast, the City of Frederick would like to alert residents about procedures which may go into effect should the City declare a Snow Emergency.  The Department of Public Works is responsible for coordinating the removal of the snow and ice from the streets of the City of Frederick to provide a safe driving surface to its users. 

 

The Mayor of the City of Frederick can declare a Snow Emergency at any point when the following events occur; large accumulation of snowfall, poor driving conditions, or a declaration of a Snow Emergency from Frederick County.  Additional conditions may also trigger a declaration of a Snow Emergency.

 

If the Mayor declares a Snow Emergency for the City of Frederick, media will be notified.  Check your local radio stations and the City website for announcements.  The City’s emergency public information line will also be updated with inclement weather announcements, 301-600-1300. 

 

If a Snow Emergency is declared, facts relating to parking restrictions, driving restrictions, etc, will be provided.  During a Snow Emergency City residents are not permitted to park on designated Snow Emergency Routes.   Any vehicles parked on these streets may be towed at the owner’s expense.  Vehicles traveling on Snow Emergency Routes will also be required to use snow tires or chains.

Enforcement will begin by the Frederick Police Department at the time the Snow Emergency is declared and continue until the Snow Emergency has been lifted. 

 

Citizens are also reminded of their responsibility to clear sidewalks from snow and ice according to Section 22-16 of the City of Frederick, Maryland Code, Titled, Removal of Snow and Ice From Sidewalks.  All owners or persons in possession of any land or premises situated on any street within the city, where sidewalks are laid, is responsible for the removal of snow and ice from the entire length of the walk and for a width of at least four (4) feet.  This must be completed within six (6) hours after it has stopped falling and drifting.  If snow or ice has fallen between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., it must be removed before 1:00 p.m. the next day.

 

In the event the snow and ice is not removed within the time and manner, the City of Frederick’s Code Enforcement Department can issue a municipal infraction of up to $100.
