PLAN TO BE IN THE STREET ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7th!

Frederick’s biggest and best block party is back for the 24th time on Saturday, October 7th, and this year it promises to be better than ever! Celebrate Frederick’s IN THE STREET, a day-long celebration of food, music and fun, takes place right in the heart of downtown Frederick – along Market Street from All Saints Street to Seventh Street, and along the Carroll Creek Linear Park. Featuring a runners’ road race, a spectacular parade, eight themed blocks packed with family-friendly activities and fabulous food, five stages of live entertainment, and a dance on top of the Carroll Creek Parking Deck, this year, and every year, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Following is a schedule of the day’s events:

9:15am – The 7th Annual Steeplechasers Mile.
This runner’s road race begins the event at 12th and North Market Streets, and finishes at Church and North Market Streets. Registration is held from 8:00-9:30am at the YMCA on North Market Street. Several competitive levels are featured including:
9:15am Corporate Challenge (teams of 5 or more)
9:30am Non-Competitive Mile (all ages)
9:45am Women's Mile (14 and older)
10:00am Men's Masters Mile (40 and older)
10:15am Men's Mile (14 to 39)
10:30am 13 and Under Mile
11:00am Awards Ceremony on Church Street

11am - IN THE STREET Parade sponsored by The Gazette
Don’t miss Frederick City Mayor Jeff Holtzinger as he kicks off the parade in a John Deere tractor! Following close behind will be marching bands, dance troupes, and even a ‘herd of cows’, courtesy of Chick-fil-A! Parade winners will be announced at the Fifth Street Stage at 1:30 p.m. The parade begins at Thomas Johnson High School and continues down Market Street to Church Street, turns on Church and concludes at Bentz Street.

NOON – IN THE STREET festival begins!

Don’t miss some of the exciting new features at this year’s event! Sights and sounds from around the globe will greet you as you stroll along the Carroll Creek Linear Park, new home to the ever-popular International Block. Looking for the best in regional alternative and rock music? Head to the Sixth Street Stage. Along the way explore the newly created History Block, as well as six other themed blocks, two wine and beer tasting locations and skateboard demonstrations throughout the afternoon. Following is a listing of activities starting at Carroll Creek Linear Park and moving north to 7th Street:

INTERNATIONAL BLOCK - South side of Carroll Creek Linear Park
Take a trip around the world, just a few steps off Market Street! This block highlights the performers and groups that make Frederick so diverse. Watch a display of traditional Japanese martial arts or enjoy a story delivered in Spanish or French. Bring your appetite; the block also includes food from around the world! Stop by the new Carroll Creek amphitheater to get a taste of Celtic dance or even belly dancing!

Sample wine and beer from local vineyards and breweries, while enjoying live performances with an international flair directly across from the sampling area. Visitors must be 21 years and older with ID to enter. $.

KIDS BLOCK - All Saints to Patrick St. & along North side of Carroll Creek Linear Park
This block will be filled with fun things for families and kids to see and do. Race through an obstacle course, visit a petting zoo, create an artistic button, paint a pumpkin, watch a puppet show and enjoy tons of craft activities! Some activities charge a small fee. Coordinated by the Frederick Jaycees. Also stop by the Carroll Creek Stage located in Kid’s Block.

ART BLOCK - Patrick to Church Street
Art block showcases Frederick’s vibrant arts community, including dance troupes, theater groups and choral ensembles showcasing live performances throughout the day. Visit the Frederick Arts Council tent to place your bid in a silent auction for one of twenty interpretations of the Frederick spires created by local artists, or volunteer to have your portrait sketched by four different artists. Check out the merchant activities in the street, including a traditional toys and games area with Dancing Bear Toys & Gifts and a Cut-A-Thon for Breast Cancer, sponsored by The Temple-A Paul Mitchell Partner School. Be sure to visit the dance floor on East Church Street to enjoy live free entertainment throughout the day!

HISTORY BLOCK - Church to Second Street
Do you have a passion for the past? Don’t miss this newly created block devoted to the rich history of Frederick County and beyond. Visitors in this block will enjoy colonial games and artifacts, a Frederick History Trivia Contest, children’s crafts and a platform stage featuring performances in living history! Looking for a place to change your little one’s diaper during the festival? The Evangelical Reformed United Church located on Church Street will provide baby changing stations as well as baby feeding space. And remember to stop by the stage on West 2ndStreet for live country music all afternoon.

CLASSIC COMMUNITY CORPORATION’S HEALTH AND FITNESS BLOCK -
Second to Third Street
Want to nurture your body and mind? Let this block inspire you! Test the health of your marriage with a short quiz, explore the art of yoga, watch a live group-exercise demonstration, receive a fitness evaluation from a certified personal trainer or learn about programs designed to promote the health of mothers with young children. Whoever you are, this block is sure to get you moving! Also be sure to visit the merchant activity in this block sponsored by Wheel Base. Ride your bicycle to IN THE STREET and enjoy free parking behind Wheel Base. Walk your bicycle to the front of the shop and take advantage of free safety inspections and helmet fittings! Please note, due to safety concerns, bicycles may not be ridden at IN THE STREET. Stop by the West Third Street Stage for great music throughout the afternoon.

3rd STREET STAGE

CHARITY BLOCK – Third to Fourth Street
Paint a pumpkin, make an old-fashioned lemon peppermint twist, have your hair or nails painted, participate in a fishing activity to win a prize, build a bird house or lend a hand in making a quilt that will be sent to those in need. All these wonderful activities and more are found in Charity Block. Some activities charge a small fee. Proceeds from these activities will benefit an approved charity.

BEER AND WINE SAMPLING - Mid-Block between Third & Fourth Streets
Come sample wine and beer from local vineyards and breweries including Elk Run, Frederick Cellars and Sugarloaf Vineyards, Brewer’s Alley, Wild Goose Brewery and Barley and Hops. Visitors must be 21 years and older with ID to enter. $.

SPORTS BLOCK –Fourth to Fifth Streets
“Are you ready for some action?” This block is packed with activities and challenges to test your athletic abilities. Climb a rock wall, find out how fast your curveball is at the Speed Pitch and test your soccer skills. Don’t forget to visit Passions Spirits & Wine to try your hand at a ring toss and walk away with fun prizes! Stop by the West Fifth Street Stage featuring bluegrass, blues and rock! This block is coordinated by the Frederick Keys.

5th STREET STAGE

BRINK’S HOME SECURITY PUBLIC SAFETY BLOCK - Fifth to Sixth Street
Pay tribute to our local heroes who put their lives on the line daily for our public safety. Check out a Coast Guard boat, antique fire engines and police cars, a display of rescue equipment, and a “beer goggles” demonstration! All these wonderful activities and more are found in Public Safety Block. Don’t miss the West Sixth Street Stage where the best in regional rock music can be found.

SKATEBOARD EVENT– Sixth to Seventh Street
Bring your skateboard and join in the fun as attendees are invited to try various tricks right on Market Street! Coordinated by Pit Crew. Play “Twister” on an inflatable game board sponsored by Verizon Wireless located across from the 6th Street Stage!

THROUGHOUT THE DAY - MARC Train Station –
Choose to enjoy a fun-filled day of festival-hopping between Brunswick’s Railroad Days and IN THE STREET. Trains departing Brunswick at 9am, Noon, and 3pm; departing Frederick at 10am, 1pm, and 4pm. Tickets are available at the Tourism Council of Frederick County, 19 East Church Street – 301-644-4047. Ticket prices vary and may be purchased at a discount in advance.

FOOD VENDORS
Part of what makes IN THE STREET such an awesome event is the delicious food offered throughout the festival. Make sure to bring your appetite, local restaurants Canal Bar & Grill, Griff’s Landing, Market Bagel & Deli, Pretzel & Pizza Creations, Bentz Street Raw Bar, Market Street Café, Cacique, Isabella’s, Firestone’s Restaurant, Acacia, Brewer’s Alley, and Passion’s Spirits & Wine are bringing their fantastic menus IN THE STREET!

Stop by our festival information centers to pick up an official schedule of events and to purchase a 2006 IN THE STREET t-shirt for $14 plus tax. CellularOne Information centers are located at the corner of Church and Market Street in History Block and the corner of 4th and Market Streets in Sports Block.

5:30-9:00pm ON THE DECK Party!
Finish off this fun-filled day with a party on the top floor of the Carroll Creek Parking Deck. Live music, beer, wine, refreshments and an amazing view make ON THE DECK a party you won’t want to miss. This year’s ON THE DECK Party is host to IN THE STREET alumni and Frederick favorite, The Cool Jerks. This R&B cover band will show you how Frederick rocked during the first IN THE STREET twenty-three years ago! Cover charge is $10.00. All guests must by 21 or older with a valid I.D. to get in. Come early, because this party fills up quick!

First Saturday Gallery Walk – Into the Night
Don’t miss a very special First Saturday Gallery Walk from 5 – 9 p.m. Market Street will remain closed to traffic between Patrick and Second Streets until 8 p.m. to expand the regular First Saturday excitement. Downtown Frederick goes a bit country and a bit scary with a ton of family fun! Activities include a FREE hayride with stops on Church and Patrick Streets, courtesy of Crumland Farms, outdoor movies, square dancing, FREE pumpkin painting at a patch on Patrick Street, a blue grass band, a bit of MacBeth by the Shakespeare Project, plus lanterns at every corner and spooky pumpkins and crazy scarecrows in the downtown merchant windows to get you in the mood for a fun filled night! First Saturday Gallery Walk is organized by Downtown Frederick Partnership. The Partnership is a private, nonprofit organization that works hard to enhance, promote and preserve the vitality of Downtown Frederick. In the mean time, following are answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding IN THE STREET.

Where is the best place to park?
The City of Frederick has three convenient parking decks downtown. Note: the Court Street Deck is closed for renovations and will reopen in November. The Carroll Creek parking deck, the new W. Patrick Street parking deck and the Church Street parking deck all offer parking in close proximity to the event. To access the Church Street parking deck, take East Street to East Second Street. There will be a sign for the entrance to the parking deck on the left hand side of the street. Patrick Street provides access to the Carroll Street and W. Patrick Street parking decks. Handicapped parking is available in all three parking decks. Additional parking is available at Thomas Johnson High School, located on North Market Street. Frederick County Transit will provide FREE shuttle service, to either the Seventh Street Fountain or the corner of Market and Patrick Streets. Service will begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue every 30 minutes throughout the day until 5:30 p.m.

Which streets remain open?
Most of the roads surrounding the event remain open. South Street on the south end and Seventh Street on the north end of town remain open. Patrick Street is also open throughout the day.

What is the best way to get to IN THE STREET?
Since so many streets are affected by this event, please check our website for directions – www.inthestreet.info.

Is alcohol allowed at IN THE STREET?
Alcohol is not permitted at IN THE STREET. However, there are two Beer and Wine Sampling areas. One is located in the parking lot next to Olde Town Tavern at 325 N. Market Street. The second area is located along the North side of the Carroll Creek Linear Park, directly in front of the C. Burr Artz Public Library. You must be 21 with ID to enter. For a small fee, visitors will receive tickets good for samples from local wineries and breweries. You can also stop by the great pubs and restaurants throughout the downtown area.

Can I bring my pet?
A CITY ORDINANCE PROHIBITS PETS AT IN THE STREET, WHICH INCLUDES REPTILES. Large crowds and loud noises are not healthy for pets, so please leave them at home. Code Enforcement will be on hand to enforce this ordinance.

Am I allowed to set-up a booth?
All participants must be approved by the IN THE STREET Committee and receive a license from The City of Frederick Office of Special Events. If you are interested in being involved, please call The City of Frederick Office of Special Events to be placed on the invitation list for 2007. Code Enforcement representatives will be on-site to verify that all participants display the licenses distributed by the Office of Special Events.
