CITY OF FREDERICK ANNOUNCES
FREDERICK LEADERSHIP ACADEMY CLASS ON
Community Problem Solving & Communicating in Conflict
Tuesday, February 15th @ 7:00 - 9:00 pm- City Hall

Frederick, Md. --- The City of Frederick is pleased to announce a new session of the Frederick Leadership Academy- Community Problem Solving & Communicating in Conflict. The Frederick Leadership Academy was designed to serve as a foundation to the City’s commitment to partnering with neighborhoods to identify problems and formulate creative neighborhood based solutions. The Academy will cultivate the consortium of talented residents who are involved, or considering involvement, in a Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC), neighborhood, civic, or business association and provide these groups with the tools needed to effectuate change in their neighborhoods or associations.

This program will take place on Tuesday, February 15, from 7 - 9 p.m., at City Hall. The session will be broken into two parts as described below:
(1) 7 - 8 p.m. -Community Problem Solving- Participants will be exposed to a community problem-solving model and will be provided with the tools to identify problems and formulate creative neighborhood based solutions. The instructor for this component of the program is Vinny Hughes, chief operations officer of citizens services for the City of Frederick. Hughes was appointed as the City of Frederick's Chief Operations Officer of Citizens Services in May 2002. As the Chief Operations Officer of Citizens Services, Hughes is charged with providing leadership and management oversight to City departments responsible for economic development, recreation, social services, cultural activities, special events, neighborhood based programs, and community outreach.
(2) 8- 9 p.m.- Communicating in Conflict- Participants will learn techniques to improve communications during disputes or conflicts. The instructor for this component of he program is Yolanda Woods, citizen advocate for the City of Frederick. Woods is a professionally trained mediator who joined the City within the past year and serves an important problem-solving role for residents.

The City anticipates classes to fill quickly with limited enrollment of 25 participants. So register early! The small class size was created to foster an informal, education-friendly atmosphere. There is no charge for the program.
