CITY RECEIVES COMMUNITY PARKS AND PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT GRANT FOR
MARYVALE PARK
Frederick, Md. --- The City of Frederick Recreation Department was awarded a $50,000 grant to purchase and install playground equipment at Maryvale Park from the Community Parks and Playground Equipment Program, which is administered by Program Open Space (POS) within the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The new playground equipment will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood park.
The grant accentuates Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ strong commitment to build and enhance recreational opportunities for the City of Frederick. DNR contributed $1,066,000 for the land purchase and development of Hill Street Park, which has 2 multi-purposes fields, two inline Hockey Courts, playground equipment, world class Skate Park, shared use pathway, and large pavilion. POS funds were awarded $154,000 to update antiquated playground equipment at the following parks: Max Kehne; Hillcrest; Monocacy Village; Catoctin; Carrollton; College Estates; Stonegate; Baughman's Babee; Grove; and Harmon.
“We have been very fortunate to have such a good working relationship with Project Open Space, it has enabled us to make some significant upgrades in a relatively short time period. Ultimately, these improvements have increased the "quality of life" element for all citizens that enjoy our wonderful park system. We are very proud to offer over 60 diversified parks to the general public.”- Roelkey Myers, director of recreation for the City of Frederick.
“The Department of Natural Resources and the City share a common vision of building and enhancing quality recreational opportunities for the residents of Frederick. We sincerely thank Department of Natural Resources Secretary C. Ronald Franks and John Braskey, Regional Administrator & Deidra Ritchie Ass. Regional Admin - Program Open Space for their continued support. Also, Darlene DeMario, City of Frederick Grants Coordinator, should be recognized for her continued work to obtain grants that improve the quality of life for Frederick residents.”- Vincent Hughes, chief operations officer of citizen services for the City of Frederick.
The Department of Recreation will meet with NAC 9 in March 2005 to discuss appropriate playground equipment and placement. Residents are encouraged to attend and participate in this interactive process.
