FREDERICK READS - A COMMUNITY PROGRAM TO HOST COMMUNITY BOOK TALKS BY VETERAN SPORTS WRITER AND AUTHOR FRANK DEFORD
Frederick, Md. --- Mark your calendar for an exciting event sponsored by Frederick Reads next April! On April 3, 2006, veteran sports writer and novelist Frank Deford will be in Frederick holding three all community book talks or discussions.
Frederick Reads is a community group created as a result of a 2004 study released by The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEA) that found a drastic decrease in non-work related reading by adults in recent years. With those study results in mind, several local groups/organizations joined forces to create Frederick Reads. The immediate goal of Frederick Reads is to inspire young adults and adults to read a selected author’s works in anticipation of a culminating event featuring the author. Frederick reads has chosen to highlight Frank Deford for the initial year. Deford is the author of fourteen books, including novels (An American Summer & Everybody’s All American, non-fiction titles, screenplays and biographies. A memoir, Alex: The Life Of A Child, is about his daughter who died of cystic fibrosis. His work covers almost all mediums: print, radio, TV, and stage. His voice can be heard every Wednesday morning on Morning Edition on National Public Radio, and he is a regular correspondent on HBO’s RealSports with Bryant Gumbel.
Sponsors of the April Deford events include: Frederick Community College, Hood College, Frederick County Public Libraries, Downtown Frederick Partnership, The City of Frederick, and the Frederick County Public Schools. Additionally Wonder Book and Video is the first business to sign on as a sponsor. The Consortium of Historic Sites, The Shakespeare Project, Frederick County Arts Council, and the Literacy Council are planning related events.
For additional information or sponsorship information please contact Alderwoman Marcia Hall at 301-600-1382 or mhall@cityoffrederick.com.
