FREDERICK SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION PRESENTS 2005 CONTEST FOR YOUNG ARTISTS
Frederick, Md. ---The Frederick Sister Cities Association extends an invitation to young artists to participate in a competition depicting the theme of “ Connecting Global Villages”. The primary focus is to select one piece of artwork to be submitted for a competition sponsored by Sister Cities International. In addition, an exhibition will be held February 15 though 28th, 2005 at The Delaplaine Visual Arts Center to showcase work submitted and accepted. The Frederick Sister Cities Association and The Delaplaine Visual Arts Center will host an opening reception on February 19 from noon until 2:00 p.m. The winners will be announced at approximately 12:30 p.m. during the opening.
The theme for the 2005 Young Artists Program is “ Connecting Global Villages”. Artists are limited only by their imagination. The purpose of this program is to encourage youth from the Frederick area to express, through original artwork, their idea of the Sister Cities mission to foster international cooperation and understanding between people of the United States and their foreign counterparts.
Each participating artist must be between 13 and 18 years of age; born between April 30, 1986 and April 29, 1992. Artists living in, or attending school in Frederick may submit an entry.
A $200 prize will be awarded to the winning artist. The chosen work will be entered, at the expense of the Frederick Sister Cities Association, into the 2005 Sister Cities International Contest: 2005 Young Artists Program, “ Connecting Global Villages”. At that contest, the artwork will be judged with entries from around the world for one of ten $300 prizes. Prize winning entries in the international contest will become the property of Sister Cities International. In our local competition, the artists receiving second and third place awards will receive prizes of $100 each.
A distinguished panel will judge entries on originality, composition, and theme interpretation. The judges’ decisions will be final.
All entries must be original in design and the artwork of the student. Parents, friends, teachers or others must not assist the artist. Only new pieces inspired by the theme are acceptable. Only two-dimensional artwork, no larger than 24 inches by 30 inches is acceptable. Water colors, oils, pastels, pen and ink, charcoal, photography, two-dimensional mixed media-as well as computer-generated art-are all acceptable media. Do not submit framed art. Attach an entry label to the back, top right-hand corner. A second entry blank should be submitted along with the artwork, but not attached. Submission of an entry constitutes permission to photograph it for publicity purposes and agreement with all conditions set forth in the prospectus. The Frederick Sister Cities Association makes no guarantees against damage or loss of entry. The Frederick Sister Cities Association reserves the right to decline any work which upon arrival does not, for whatever reason, meet the standards of the exhibition.
Artwork should be hand delivered to The Delaplaine Visual Arts Center during regular business hours of operation between Thursday, February 10th and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2005. Students must pick up their artwork from The Delaplaine Visual Arts Center during regular hours of operation on February 28th or March 1st.
