The City of Frederick Presents

A Signature Event

In Conjunction with A Brush With Frederick

What an incredible success! A Brush With Frederick brought more than 800 people to Carroll Creek on Saturday, September 4 th. Thus far families, local businesses, non-profits and other community groups have painted 238 squares, covering more than 22,000 square feet of concrete along Carroll Creek between Market and Carroll Street.

Now, the City of Frederick presents our Signature Event! A continuation of A Brush With Frederick, the Signature Event will be held Saturday October 2 nd from 12:00-5:00, in conjunction with the IN THE STREET festival. For a $1 donation anyone can sign their name with black paint in designated Signature Blocks scattered throughout the Brush With Frederick artwork. Already more than 300 people have taken part in this community signature event, leaving their mark on Frederick. These signatures create a time capsule of the community under the planned park improvements; so let future generations know YOU WERE THERE!

And we aren’t finished! Due to an incredible response from the community, the City of Frederick will continue to sell Brush With Frederick squares throughout the month of September. Reserve your spot ahead of time by calling 240-629-6360, and paint anytime between now and Friday October 1 st. Squares are sold on a first-come first-serve basis! ALL ARTWORK MUST BE COMPLETE BY FRIDAY OCTOBER 1 ST TO ALLOW FOR AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY TO BE TAKEN. Postcards of the aerial photography will be available soon – check the City of Frederick website the end of September for more details!

Squares are still available in 5ft x 5ft for $15, 10ft x 10ft for $30 and 20ft x 20ft for $60. Please plan to pay by cash or check (made out to The City of Frederick, MD). All proceeds will be used to fund public art initiatives in Carroll Creek Park.

Please remember that participants must provide their own paint. Be sure to use 100% acrylic, semi-gloss exterior paint – that’s basic latex exterior house paint that can be purchased at any home improvement store. And ask the professionals at the stores how much paint they think you’ll need to cover your area. Go to www.cityoffrederick.com/brushwithfrederick to view complete event rules.

A special thanks to our local Duron store, located on the Golden Mile in Frederick, for their support of the project. Additionally, the City of Frederick would like to thank Costco for their donation of bottled water on September 4 th – it was a hot afternoon and many people were grateful for the free water offered during the event!

And thank you to all those who made the planning and success of this event possible – the City’s Department of Public Works, Office of Special Events, Frederick Festival of the Arts, Downtown Frederick Partnership, the Frederick Arts Council, the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center, local artist Calvin Ed Ramsburg and the Carroll Creek Task Force.

If you haven’t taken the opportunity to walk the creek between Market and Carroll Streets to view the array of community artwork, please do so! This once-in-a-lifetime event will only be visible until January 2005, when the City begins construction of park improvements.
