City Turned Over Documents To Historical Society of Frederick County

Frederick, Md. ---Please be advised Mayor Jennifer P. Dougherty turned over City documents that date back to 1790 to the Historical Society of Frederick County Tuesday, October 26th at 10:00 a.m. at her regularly scheduled press conference. These documents, recently catalogued by The City of Frederick Legal Department, include corporate expense/receipt journals and Mayoral Dockets from approximately 1790 to 1890.

Mark S. Hudson, Executive Director with Historical Society of Frederick County, said their organization began discussing issues relating to the storage and care of City records as early as 1996.

With the development of the Heritage Preservation Center, a state of the art facility for the storage of archival records, the Historical Society had the means to provide adequate storage, with appropriate consideration for security and environmental controls. The Center is located at 117 S. Bentz Street in Frederick. The Center was completed in September of 2003 and began accepting historical collections earlier this year.

The Heritage Preservation Center was developed over a period of over three years and a cost of over $600,000.

The City records will be made available for researchers and City employees at the Society's Research Library on Church Street. In most cases, records can be retrieved with 24-hour notice.

The Historic Society has a similar repository agreement with Frederick County. County records of permanent historical value have been stored in the facility since September of this year.
