POLICE DEPARTMENT URGES HALLOWEEN SAFETY
Chief Kim C. Dine of the Frederick Police Department encourages children and adults to enjoy a safe Halloween.
Recommendations for trick-or-treaters include: wear safe, flame-retardant, bright-colored costumes, carry lit flashlights, wear reflective tape, walk on sidewalks, and visit only well-lighted houses and apartments. Because costume masks can impair vision, wear them only at the doorstep. Warn children not to approach strange pets and animals.
Children should be accompanied by an adult.
Although tampering with treats is rare, all candy and treats must be carefully inspected. Discard unwrapped and suspicious-looking items.
Homes offering treats should have bright external lighting. Yards must be cleared of anything that might cause an accident, including tools, ladders, hoses, flowerpots etc. Pets should be confined. Battery powered lights should replace candles in all decorations.
