COMCAST-SPECTACOR SELLS CONTROLLING INTEREST
IN THREE MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAMS
RADIO EXECUTIVE DAVID PEARLMAN COMPLETES TRIPLE PLAY AND PURCHASES THREE MINOR LEAGUE AFFILIATES OF BALTIMORE ORIOLES
(PHILADELPHIA, PA --- July 26, 2004) Comcast-Spectacor, the Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment firm, announced today it has completed a transaction in which the company is selling controlling interest in its three minor league baseball teams - the Bowie Baysox, the Delmarva Shorebirds and the Frederick Keys - all affiliates of the Baltimore Orioles - to Triple Play, LLC, a newly-formed, family entertainment company headed by the highly-respected broadcasting executive David Pearlman and his partner Steve Horowitz.
The transaction is subject to approvals from the teams' respective leagues, the National Association and Major League Baseball. In keeping with company policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We're still going to be actively involved as a minority partner in the teams and within the community," said Comcast-Spectacor Ventures President Peter Luukko. "Several of our companies are in the business of public assembly facility management, food and beverage service and ticketing, and we will continue to provide these services to these teams as part of this transaction."
"These teams are three of the best franchises in minor league baseball and it is our goal to build on the already affordable family entertainment tradition that has made these teams models of excellence," said Pearlman, President of Triple Play Partners. "We see tremendous opportunity to grow these ball clubs for the communities and the fans to which they serve."
Comcast-Spectacor acquired the three baseball clubs in 2000, managing the stadiums in which they play through their management company, Global Spectrum, and the food and beverage concession contracts at these facilities through its concession company, Ovations Food Services.
"We're very proud of the way our staffs have laid the foundation for and implemented very successful team operations," said Comcast-Spectacor Vice President of Minor League Operations Frank Miceli. "We're very confident that David and Triple Play, LLC, will continue to build on this commitment and dedication to the fans and their communities. We're excited that we will continue to be involved in Triple Play's efforts."
The Bowie Baysox, Class AA, play in baseball's Eastern League, the Delmarva Shorebirds, Class A, play in the South Atlantic League and the Frederick Keys, Class A, play in the Carolina League.
