SUMMER CONCERT SERIES GETS A CASE OF THE BLUES

One of the area’s best blues bands comes to the Bandshell in Frederick’s Baker Park this Sunday night. The Nighthawks have been playing blues and “roots rock” music for more than 30 years, playing roots rock before there was such a thing as roots rock. You can see them for free as part of the Summer Concert Series, beginning at 7 PM, preceded by a carillon concert starting at 6:15 PM.
Named after blues and guitar musician Robert Nighthawk, the band has worked with blues legends such as Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Big Walter Horton and Elvin Bishop. But they’re not just a blues band. The Nighthawks play a wide variety of music that appeals to virtually everyone, mixing blues, rock and soul - along with rockabilly and swing. They promise, and deliver, a great live show. Just ask their fans, who are not only in the Washington D.C. area, but also around the world. The band hasn’t slowed down any in 30 years; they’ve released over 20 albums, and play 200 shows a year. Their busy summer schedule includes stops up and down the East Coast, along with the performance in Baker Park.
Make sure you come early for the carillon concert that starts at 6:15 PM. Claire Marie Moblard will play the bells. She has studied with Frederick’s City Carillonneur for nearly three years. With a degree in organ performance, Moblard is also gifted in organ, piano and harp.
While the event is free, the Summer Concert Series Committee encourages you to bring a canned food item in lieu of admission to support the Frederick City Community Action Agency Food Bank.
This event would not be possible without the generous financial contributions made by the following community-minded businesses: Gold Sponsors -Ausherman Homes, BB&T, Bechtel Foundation, COMSTAR Federal Credit Union, Farmers and Mechanics Bank, and Sandy Spring Bank; Silver Sponsors - Bank One, CitiMortgage, and The Frederick News-Post; Bronze Sponsors - Cellular One, Chessie Federal Credit Union and the Frederick Arts Council.
