CITY OF FREDERICK MOURNS LOSS OF OFFICER FREDERICK WILLIAM BURTON, III
Frederick, Md. --- City of Frederick Mayor Jennifer P. Dougherty, the Board of Aldermen, and Police Chief Kim Dine, are saddened to announce the passing of Officer Frederick William Burton, III.
Born on November 6, 1961, OFC. Burton started his career with the Frederick Police Department on June 6, 1983, attending the 25 th Police Academy. Upon graduation he was assigned to Patrol Division where he served from January 1984 through July 2000. OFC. Burton served the remainder of his tenure with the Department in the Community Services Division.
While assigned to the Community Services Division, OFC. Burton was instrumental in developing and implementing the School Community Involvement Team; a cooperative effort between the Department and Frederick County Public Schools. Recently OFC. Burton was assigned to represent the Department in its cooperative effort with the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek that has established a Police Activities League (PAL). OFC. Burton also was one of the first members of the Department’s Honor Guard, which was organized in 1992.
OFC. Burton was the recipient of numerous “Letters of Acknowledgement,” and “Letters of Appreciation,” for his service to the Community. OFC. Burton was a licensed pilot. He especially was interested in the care and preservation of historic aircrafts.
“Bill was dedicated to his service to the community as a police officer. His loss will be felt by all of those encountered him as a co-worker or a friend,” stated Mayor Dougherty. “My deepest sympathy to his family and members of the police department with whom he served.”
Police Chief Kim Dine reiterated Mayor Dougherty’s comments stating, “Officer Burton’s outstanding service to the Frederick Police Department and the citizens of Frederick will always be remembered and the hearts of all members of the police department go out to the family.”
The following are the arrangements: Monday, December 6, 3 - 5 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m., Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street. The funeral will take place on Tuesday, December 7, at 11 a.m., All Saints Episcopal Church, 108 West Church Street. The City respectfully requests the media to respect the families right for privacy during this time of mourning.
