FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE: Thursday, November 6, 2003
Frederick,
Md. --- On
October 16th the Board of Aldermen of the City of Frederick voted in
favor of adding a non-voting student liaison to the Board of Aldermen. At tonight’s Public Meeting Ms. Mary
Kathleen (Katy) Griffith began serving her term.
Griffith,
a senior at Frederick High School, was selected by a committee of teachers
after the application process to represent the school. An active member of her school’s student
government, Griffith was interested in comparing her school government
experiences with those in city government.
Griffith stated, “As an advocate for my school, I always strive to
change the reputation Frederick High has within the city and the county. For that reason, I feel that the opportunity
to serve a student liaison to the Board of Aldermen will allow city officials
to gain the opinion of a school that cares very much about what is happening in
the community.”
Griffith is very active in
her school. Last year she served as
class president. This year she is the
historian/webmaster for her class, as well as serving as a member of the
Student
Government Executive
Committee. In addition she is also
involved in National Honor Society, the Sports Medicine Program, Girls Athletic
Association, Student Service Learning, Varsity Volleyball and Swimming.
Griffith’s
term will end in December of 2003. At
that point a new student liaison to the Board of Aldermen will be named from
Governor Thomas Johnson High School.
The
student liaison to the Board of Aldermen will be required to attend 75% of the
Mayor and Board of Aldermen Workshops and Public Meetings, as well as be a City
of Frederick resident. The student
liaison will be permitted to participate in debate only during Workshops,
however not at Public Meetings (with exception of during public comment
process). The student liaison will also
be excluded from attending closed or executive sessions.
