FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, May 20, 2003
Frederick, Md. --- The City of Frederick is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the William R. Diggs Memorial Swimming Pool on Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. Mayor Jennifer P. Dougherty, the Board of Aldermen, Department of Recreation staff, other City staff, and area youth, will help re-dedicate Diggs Pool following months of extensive renovations and repairs to pool. Entry to the pool will be free all day and the first 50 children to enter, beginning at 10 a.m., will receive a free ‘noodle’ courtesy of the City of Frederick.
Diggs Pool didn’t open at all last summer. Suffering from a leak, poor layout and a record drought, Roelkey Myers, City of Frederick Director of Recreation, stated the completion of this project, which was originally scheduled as an FY04 project, was accelerated as a result of Mayor Jennifer Dougherty’s foresight and planning. $350,000 later, the City of Frederick is ready to unveil this first of its kind City pool. Designed as a family pool, Diggs Pool will offer an array of fun for everyone. The zero-entry pool, similar to the beach, gradually declines to the maximum depth of 4ft. Tumble buckets, water slide, water propulsion devices, flotation devices, even a squirty whale, are sure to add to everyone’s enjoyment. Two lap lanes and poles for water volleyball round out the offering at Diggs.
The pool will always have two lifeguards on duty as well as a full-time aquatic director. Patrons can pay per day or purchase punch cards. Season passes will also be available.
Beginning on Memorial Day, Diggs Pool will be open Monday – Friday from 4 – 8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; and Sunday from 12:30 – 8 p.m. Hours of operation will change slightly when Frederick County Public Schools are dismissed for the summer. Hours will then be Monday – Saturday, from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.
The William R. Diggs Memorial Swimming Pool is located in Mullinix Park along the Carroll Creek promenade (behind the County Court House & City Police Department). An access road off of West All Saints Street leads to the Diggs Pool and Mullinix Park.
In the event of rain, the Diggs Pool Grand Opening will take place on Sunday, June 1, at 12:30 p.m.
