WATER MAIN CLEANING
SCHEDULED TO BEGIN MAY 19
IN VILLA ESTATES AREA OF THE
CITY
Frederick, Md. ---- The City of Frederick will begin cleaning water mains in the Villa
Estates area on May 19th. This
process will benefit the city’s existing water mains in several ways. It will eliminate obstructions in mains,
which cause friction and increased pump working pressures. It will also eliminate places for
microorganisms and bacteria to grow.
Finally it will eliminate poor water quality, which results from sediment
deposits breaking loose in the mains.
Marc Stachowski, Division Chief for Water and Sewer for the City of
Frederick, also stated this process will assist in sealing any cracks or leaks
in the City’s water lines, which will help in the ongoing water conservation
efforts in the City. Benefits of this process include;
improved water flow, reduction of hiding places for bacterium to grow, and
increased life span of the pipes.
The process for citizens in the Villa Estates area of the City (streets between Rosemont Avenue and 7th; and Military Road and Biggs Avenue) will include hooking affected homes up to a temporary water line, cleaning and ling the existing mains and then re-attaching homes to the cleaned main. Citizens in this area can expect slightly discolored water due to the agitation of the water in the mains. Running a faucet inside the home until the water clears can clear this discoloration. City crews will also be flushing hydrants in the area to help clear the lines. There is no detrimental affect to health from this process. Citizens should also expect temporary lines on the sidewalks and are cautioned to be careful and alert when walking around the temporary lines.
This project is estimated to take 120 - 150 calendar days to complete. Work will commence weekdays at 7 a.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. The Department of Public Works will be alerting affected citizens with additional notices within the next two weeks.
In late March, the City of Frederick’s Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to award Bid #03-19 for “Watermain Cleaning and Lining” to Heitkamp, Inc. The contract, at the expense of $34.01 per linear foot, was awarded allowing up to $600,000 to complete this process in the Villa Estates area of the City.
Questions and concerns regarding the Water Main Cleaning Process should be directed to the City of Frederick’s communications line, 301-600-1440.
