RETURNS TO DRAIN POND IN CITY OF FREDERICK'S MUNICIPAL
FOREST
Frederick,
Md. --- The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has
returned to the City of Frederick's Municipal Forest
to drain one of the ten ponds searched this winter in
relation to the ongoing anthrax investigations from
the fall of 2001. Mayor Jennifer P. Dougherty and City
of Frederick Police Chief Kim Dine were fully briefed
by the FBI on the process for draining the pond that
has an approximate surface area of one acre. The engineering
firm of Phillips and Jordon, Inc. has been contracted
by the FBI to complete the task of draining the pond
that is estimated to be 4-5 feet deep. The area will
remain classified and restricted throughout the investigation;
however there will be no street closures impacting residents
who reside in that area. This portion of the FBI investigation
will last 3-4 weeks. The area will be fully restored
by the FBI upon completion of the work in coordination
with City officials.
Mayor
Dougherty and Chief Dine will continue to receive updates
from the FBI on a regular basis. Extensive testing has
already taken place. Results indicate no threat to the
public health and safety of the citizens of Frederick.
Over 300 soil, water and sediment tests have taken place
over the course of this investigation. The City will
continue its customary and usual testing of the municipal
water supply as it does on a daily basis.
The
FBI will continue to work in coordination with the City
of Frederick's Police Department, Maryland Department
of the Environment (MDE) and Maryland Department of
Natural Resources (DNR).
The
City of Frederick does not anticipate additional comments
or special news conferences today, Monday, June 9 unless
something in the investigation warrants. Mayor Dougherty
will meet tomorrow at 10 a.m., City Hall Board Room
for her weekly news conference.
