SNOW EMERGENCY TO BE DECLARED

BY MAYOR DOUGHERTY

EFFECTIVE 10 P.M. TONIGHT

Frederick, Md. --- Mayor Jennifer Dougherty will declare a Snow Emergency for the City of Frederick beginning at 10 p.m., tonight, Thursday, February 27.

During a Snow Emergency City residents are not permitted to park on designated Snow Emergency Routes.   Any vehicles parked on these streets may be towed at the owner’s expense.  Due to the residual snow banks that still remain in some areas of the City, the Department of Public Works is urging residents to park vehicles off the streets, i.e. driveways, parking decks, alleys, etc.

Enforcement will begin by the Frederick Police Department, at the 12 a.m., Friday, February 28, and will continue until the Snow Emergency has been lifted.  Therefore, please remove cars from snow emergency routes prior to turning in for the evening.

Vehicles traveling on Snow Emergency Routes will also be required to use snow tires or chains.

Citizens are also reminded of their responsibility to clear sidewalks from snow and ice according to Section 22-16 of the City of Frederick, Maryland Code, Titled, Removal of Snow and Ice From Sidewalks.  All owners or persons in possession of any land or premises situated on any street within the city, where sidewalks are laid, is responsible for the removal of snow and ice from the entire length of the walk and for a width of at least four (4) feet.  This must be completed within six (6) hours after it has stopped falling and drifting.  If snow or ice has fallen between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m., it must be removed before 1 p.m. the next day.  In the event the snow and ice is not removed within the time and manner, the City of Frederick’s Code Enforcement Department can issue a municipal infraction of up to $100.  This ordinance will be strictly enforced.

Residents are also advised that the City will continue to work on the removal of large masses of snow, which may result in snow being pushed into open driveways and sidewalk cutaways.  The City apologizes in advance for this inconvenience, but stresses the importance of removing snow from walks and driveways.

Also the Streets and Sanitation Committee Meeting that is scheduled for 9 a.m., tomorrow, Friday, February 28, will be cancelled IF there is delayed opening or closing of Frederick County Public Schools.  Check your local television and radio stations for details in the morning.

Additional information regarding inclement weather will be posted on a regular basis on the City’s Emergency Public Information Line 301-600-1300.
