MAYOR DOUGHERTY SEEKING CITIZEN PARTICIPATION IN MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT

 WEEK 2003 CONTESTS

Frederick, Md. --- Today Mayor Jennifer Dougherty announced two exciting contests as part of the tenth annual Municipal Government Week.  Municipal Government Week will take place April 21 – 25.  This week-long celebration is designed to promote citizens’ awareness of and interest in their local government.  One of the ways Mayor Dougherty has chosen to celebrate is by sponsoring two contests; essay and amateur photography.

As residents, we all know the City of Frederick is rich in history and tradition.  It is also emerging as an innovative and cutting edge community where businesses and families alike want to be!  Here’s your chance to let us know what you think makes Frederick unique!  Citizens of all ages are encouraged to submit an essay explaining why they feel Frederick is a special place. The essay should be between 250 and 500 words.  Essays can be emailed or mailed, by Friday, April 18.  Essay’s received after the deadline will not be included in selection for prizes.  The top three essays will be posted on the City’s website and prizes will be given to the top entries.

The City also wants to SEE what makes Frederick unique.  Citizens of all ages are encouraged to participate in the first ever Amateur Photography Contest!  Submit photographs of places of interest, events or activities in Frederick. (Professional photographs will not be accepted.) Photographs entered in the contest will not be returned. All photographs submitted will be displayed at City Hall during Municipal Government Week and the top three entries will be posted on the city website.  Deadline is Friday, April 18, 2003.

All entries to the contests must be received by Friday, April 18, 2003. Please submit entries to: City of Frederick, Attention: Public Information Officer, Nancy Gregg Poss, 101 N. Court Street, Frederick, Md 21701 or via email nposs@cityoffrederick.com.  Please include name, address, phone number, email (if applicable) and age or date of birth with all entries. This will help the judges determine if age groups need to be established.  All prizes will be awarded at a date to be announced.  Photo entries will be on display at City Hall during Municipal Government Week, April 21-25, 2003.  Winning entries will be submitted to the Maryland Municipal League for possible publication in "Municipal Maryland" magazine.  Residents of all ages are encouraged to participate in one or more contests.  Must be a resident of the City of Frederick to enter.
