CITY OF FREDERICK CELEBRATES
THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF HISTORIC DISTRICT
Frederick, Md. --- On October 16, 1952 Mayor Donald B. Rice signed an ordinance that created the “Old Frederick District” and created an Architectural Commission to comment on the appropriateness of building permit applications for buildings in the district. The Frederick District was the first historic district in Maryland.
In 1966 the Architectural Commission became the “Historic District Commission,” which is the body that today monitors work carried out on buildings in the district. In 1977, and again in 1995, the historic district boundaries were expanded. In 2001 the district was renamed the “Frederick Town Historic District.”
For 50 years the Historic District has impressed residents and visitors with its wealth of history and historic architecture. Fredericktonians are justifiably proud of their city, and have reason to celebrate the foresight and wisdom of the citizens and elected officials who first established the historic district.
On October 16, 2002, there will be a short ceremony prior to the 2 p.m. Mayor and Board of Aldermen Workshop, proclaiming the significance of the 50th anniversary of the creation of Frederick’s historic district.
