Frederick, Md. --- The City of Frederick’s Fair Housing Commission will meet for the first time on Thursday, November 21, at 1 p.m., at City Hall – Rooms 214.

“This first meeting will allow the commission to get to know one and another as well as the staff whom they will be working with,” stated Jim Schmersahl, Director of the City’s of Frederick’s Department of Community Development.   “We also hope to draft the Fair Housing Commission’s Rules of Procedure.”

In May the Mayor and Board of Aldermen repealed Appendix F of the City Code and adopted a new replacement Appendix F- Housing Discrimination Ordinance. In that Ordinance, Section 10 calls for the establishment of a five member Fair Housing Commission.  Fair Housing Committee members include; Martha Matlick, Kaye Gant, Virginia Spencer, Nelson Zahler, and Sharon Kemper Suarez.

The responsibilities of the Fair Housing Commission are 1) to promote fair housing in the city; and 2) initiate or receive and investigate complaints of housing discrimination.
