MAYOR DOUGHERTY VISITS ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS TO ENCOURAGE “IF I WERE MAYOR” ESSAY CONTEST

Mayor Dougherty is visiting area elementary schools beginning this week in an effort to encourage students to participate in the Maryland Municipal League’s “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” essay contest. She will be teaching students about the role of mayor in city government.

The theme of this year’s contest is Building Inclusive Communities. The contest is open to all 4th grade students enrolled during the 2001-2002 school year. One winner will be selected from each of the 11 regional districts. Each winner will receive a $250 savings bond during the Municipal Night at the Baysox Ballpark on April 20, 2002. The contest gives students the opportunity to exercise their creativity, language arts, and social studies skills while learning about city government. It also promotes the statewide annual Municipal Government Week held in April. Over 1,600 students throughout Maryland participated in the essay contest last year.

Her schedule for the week February 11-15 is as follows:

South Frederick Elementary Wednesday, Feb. 13, 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM

Parkway Elementary Thursday, Feb. 14, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Whittier Elementary Friday, Feb. 15, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Waverly Elementary Friday, Feb. 15, 1:20 PM – 2:00 PM

Monocacy Elementary Friday, Feb. 15, 2:30 PM – 3:15 PM

Schedule of school visits for the week February 18-22 will be released pending confirmation.
