SNOW EMERGENCY UPDATE

FOR CITY OF FREDERICK

Special Tree Collection Planned

Frederick, Md. --- Please be advised that the City of Frederick is still under a Snow Emergency.  Due to the nature of today’s precipitation, it is not necessary for City residents who are parked on Snow Emergency Routes to move their vehicles.  It is required that vehicles traveling on Snow Emergency Routes use snow tires or chains.

Due to the significant amount of rain throughout the day beginning, at 8 p.m. the Department of Public Works will have six salt trucks reapplying salt to streets citywide.  Salt application will go on throughout the evening and into the early part of tomorrow.

The City of Frederick has also received numerous calls regarding downed trees and tree limbs.  To report a downed tree that is blocking a street/road/intersections please call the Department of Public Works at 301-600-1440.  If power lines are involved, please contact Allegheny Power’s Emergency Call Center at 1-800-255-3443.

Due to the significant damage to trees caused by today’s ice storm, the City will be offering a special tree collection service.  Property owners in the City may place downed branches and trees curbside (crews will not go onto private property) by Sunday evening, December 15.  City crews will perform the collection beginning on Monday, December 16.  Branches and trees must be cut in sections of 4 feet or less in order for the City to collect them in this special collection.  Branches and trees larger than 4 feet will not be collected.  Large trees (greater than 12 inches in diameter) should be handled through your homeowners insurance.

Citizens are also reminded of their responsibility to clear sidewalks from snow and ice according to Section 22-16 of the City of Frederick, Maryland Code, Titled, Removal of Snow and Ice From Sidewalks.  All owners or persons in possession of any land or premises situated on any street within the city, where sidewalks are laid, is responsible for the removal of snow and ice from the entire length of the walk and for a width of at least four (4) feet.  This must be completed within six (6) hours after it has stopped falling and drifting.  If snow or ice has fallen between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., it must be removed before 1:00 p.m. the next day.

In the event the snow and ice is not removed within the time and manner, The City of Frederick’s Code Enforcement Department can issue a municipal infraction of up to $100.

For additional updates regarding inclement weather please call the City’s Emergency Public Information Line at 301-600-1300.
