FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday August 22, 2002
Frederick, Md. --- In an attempt to divert water flows in the Monocacy River the City of Frederick will begin preparations for the installation of an aqua dam tomorrow. The first process, a sediment removal process from the intake structure, will begin on Friday, August 23.
If no complications with the sediment removal process arise and no significant rainfall is received between now and Tuesday morning, the aqua dam will be installed. “It is our intention to divert the flow in the Monocacy River in an attempt to increase the elevation of water flowing by the City’s intake,” commented Bill Luhn, City of Frederick Supervisor of the Monocacy River Water Treatment Plant. This will allow the City to receive 20% as permitted in the MDE Consent Order, which was signed earlier this summer. The inflatable dam will channel water into a narrower stream, opposed to how it traditionally flowing by the intake the entire width of the river.
The City of Frederick received a permit from the Maryland Department of the Environment for this project, as well with cooperation from the Army Corps of Engineers and other agencies.
According to Nancy Gregg Poss, City of Frederick Public Information Officer, the dam, which cost the City $2,200, was a small investment to assist the City in maintaining and preserving its now limited water supplies in the Lake Linganore and Fishing Creek Reservoirs.
