FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, April 19, 2002
Since Governor Glendening issued an Executive Order declaring a Drought Emergency for the Central Maryland region, The City of Frederick has experienced a 2.6% reduction in water usage.
“The
Governor’s water conservation plan calls for a reduction of water usage by
10%,” commented Marc Stachowski, City Drought Coordinator. “The City’s baseline
water consumption is 7.235 million gallons per day (MGD). Our goal is to lower
our daily water consumption by 10% or 6.511 MGD’s.”
Since
April 5, water use in The City of Frederick has varied from 6.079 MGD to 7.957
MGD. “This equates to a 2.6% average reduction in water consumption,” stated
Mr. Stachowski.
Mayor
Jennifer Dougherty is pleased with the reduction but urges residents to
continue with their water conservation practices.
“This
is a good start,” stated Mayor Jennifer Dougherty. “Precipitation levels are
still below normal and I urge everyone to conserve water in the hopes that more
stringent restrictions won’t be necessary. I appreciate everyone’s efforts in
conserving this valuable resource.”
“We
still need to meet this 10% reduction goal,” remarked Stachowski. “ People can
contact my department for additional water conservation tips at 301-600-1169.
The Maryland Department of the Environment’s website at www.mde.state.md.us/drought/default.asp
