CITY OF FREDERICK TO CELEBRATE

MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT WEEK, APRIL 22-26

The City of Frederick will celebrate Maryland Municipal Government Week April 22-26.

Each April since 1993, the Maryland Municipal League has honored Municipal Government Week in an effort to promote citizen awareness and interest in their community government.

Mayor Jennifer Dougherty kicked-off Municipal Government Week during the Regular Mayor and Board Meeting on Thursday, April 18 by proclaiming April 22-26 as Municipal Government Week. “The City of Frederick, a municipality, enhances the quality of life for its residents by maintaining natural and historic sites and structures, and by providing cultural, recreational and entertainment programs for all,” stated Mayor Dougherty.

Anna Wherry, a 4th grade student at the Visitation Academy, was part of the Thursday night

kick-off as she read her winning “If I were Mayor…” essay. Anna’s essay included ways she would make The City of Frederick a more inclusive community.

A variety of activities will be held during Municipal Government Week.

Monday night, April 22, is Municipal Government Night at Harry Grove Stadium. City government officials will join with the Keys to celebrate their local government. Mayor Dougherty will review the essay contest, the winning essays and the values of Municipal Government week.

The two essay contest winners from the Frederick County district, Anna Wherry from Frederick and Shayna Beard from Thurmont, will read their essays. The students will then have the honor of throwing out the first pitches.

The Department of Public Works and the Frederick Police Department will visit North Frederick Elementary school during Municipal Government Week.

On Wednesday, April 24, the Police Department will visit the first grade class at North Frederick Elementary. A Police Officer will educate the students on the services offered by the Police Department. Students will have the opportunity to view the special equipment in a police car. Three education sessions will be held at 9:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

On Friday, April 26, North Frederick Elementary School first-graders will be visited by the Department of Public Works. City staff will explain the responsibilities of Public Works in providing essential services to citizens. Students will see a trash truck and fire hydrant demonstration. The education sessions will be held at 9:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Advertisements will appear throughout the week in the Frederick News Post, explaining a different element of City government each day; the Mayor’s role, the role of the Aldermen, where to see government at work and how to get involved with the City government.

“We hope Municipal Government Week encourages people to take an interest in their local government,” stated Mayor Dougherty. “One way the public can see their local government at work is by attending a Public Meeting.”

Four Public Meetings are scheduled during Municipal Government Week; The Board of Zoning Appeals on Tuesday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m., the Mayor and Board of Aldermen Workshop, Wednesday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m., the Historic District Commission Workshop, Thursday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. and the Airport Commission Meeting on Thursday, April 25, 7:00 p.m. All meetings are held in City Hall, except for the Airport Commission Meeting, which is held at the Department of Public Works.

A schedule of all of the City’s Public Meetings can be found under the Public Meetings page on the City’s website at www.cityoffrederick.com. A schedule can also be viewed on Channel 99 or at the City Hall reception desk. Public Meeting schedules are also available by calling

“Municipal government continually fosters a strong foundation for government service and cooperation at the county, state and federal levels of government,” proclaimed Mayor Dougherty. “Elected officials are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in facilities and services for all residents.”
