MAYOR DOUGHERTY INSTITUTES AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

IN THE CITY OF FREDERICK

Mayor Jennifer Dougherty has instituted an internship program in The City of Frederick. The program is coordinated by the City’s Human Resources Department.

During her campaign, Mayor Dougherty spoke of the benefit of providing an internship program. “An internship with a municipal government provides an exciting education experience and a behind the scenes look at how local government works,” stated Mayor Dougherty. “This is an ideal opportunity for students to take part in the operations of a city.”

In late March, Krista Alexander, the City’s Human Resources Generalist, sent letters describing the internship program to every college in the state. “The response so far has been fair,” stated Ms. Alexander. “I have received student applications from Hood College, Swarthmore College, Johns Hopkins University and St. John’s College. I expect the interest to increase over the summer. The deadline for submitting applications for a fall internship with the City is August 19.”

“This is the City’s first organized approach to recruiting interns,” continued Ms. Alexander. “I commend Mayor Dougherty for her insight in the value of an intern program because everyone benefits. This program will definitely grow.”

Internships with The City of Frederick are unpaid and can occur in several departments including the Mayor’s Office, Legal Services, Public Information and the Department of Public Works. The year round program is flexible and can be designed around a student’s schedule. The internship can encompass an entire year or a college break.

“I invite students to come and work with us,” stated Mayor Dougherty. “As the second largest city in the State of Maryland, an internship with the City can offer ample interaction and experience with municipal legislative process. Interns will get hands on experience in building a model city.”

Students interested in the internship program can call Krista Alexander at 301-600-1388. Program information and an application are also available under Human Resources Department on the City’s web page www.cityoffrederick.com.
