CITY WATER SOURCES

During 2003 the City of Frederick utilized five different water sources to supply water to our
service area. During the year 2003, you may have received treated water from any one of these sources or a mixture of them depending on your geographical location.  The average daily production from all sources during 2003 was 6.44 million gallons per day.

55% of the water came from Linganore Creek.

30% came from the Monocacy River.

14% came from Fishing Creek at the Fishing Creek Reservoir.

<1% came from the Potomac River via Frederick County--New Design Water Plant.

<1% came from the Well #4--Riverwalk

The Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) has completed source water assessments on the vulnerability of all State water sources to contamination.  For more information on these assessments you may call the Maryland Department of Environment - Source Protection Division at 410-631-3714.

In the data tables you will see terminology with which you may not be familiar.  To help in your understanding of this information, we are providing the following definitions:

TERMS, UNITS AND ABBREVIATIONS DEFINED

MCLG - Maximum Contaminant Level Goal - The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected health risk. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety.  These goals represent a target level for a contaminant that is not necessarily achievable depending upon system constraints.
MCL
- Maximum Contaminant Level - The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water based on present regulations as set by the EPA.  To protect the public health, MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as possible, based on the best available treatment technology.
AL - Action Level - The concentration of a contaminant, which, if exceeded, initiates treatment or other requirements that a water system must follow.
TT - Treatment Technique - A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant.
NTU - Nephelometric Turbidity Unit - A measure of the clarity of drinking water.
PPM - Parts Per Million - Generally equivalent to milligrams per liter.
PPB - Parts Per Billion - Generally equivalent to micrograms per liter.
n/a - means not applicable.
nd - not detected (at the lowest method detection limit as set by EPA)
