NAC Area 7 Monthly Meeting August 2, 2005 - 7 p.m. Staley Park Pavilion
Members Present: Gail Bradley, Mike Bradley, Claudia Winkelman, and Marie Zinnert
City Representatives Present: Sara McGill
Citizens Present: Byron Schwartz, Ken Berlin, Paul Till, Earl Smith, and Pat Wachter , David Koontz
Police Representative: Officer Doug Stephenson
.
Officer Doug Stephenson:
1. 7 to 8 vehicles have been broken into along Motter Ave to Rt. 15. A lot of cars are unlocked, and some windows have been smashed. It is probably kids walking late at night and items are visible in cars.
2. If you go away on vacation, you can call 301-600-2100 for automatic house check. Make sure you leave an emergency contact number. House checks are done during the day.
3. An abandoned vehicle was removed from Staley Park..
4. A citizen voiced a concern about cars parked in the alley at Staley Park. Officer Stephenson said that if emergency vehicles can get through, they don’t do anything. The concern was for the safety of the children.
5. A question was raised about bicycles on sidewalks. In the historic district, if you are over 10 yrs of age, you cannot ride on the sidewalks. Otherwise, you obey vehicle laws.
6. Officer Stephenson reminded us to keep our eyes open and call if we see anything suspicious. A citizen remarked that the dispatcher needs to be more courteous.
Gail thanked the officer and introductions were made of all present.
Old Business:
1. Sarah said they have 12 volunteers for the grass brigade.
2. Marie had suggested we do a canned good collection at the concert in the parks. Sarah contacted Amy Riley and we have to let her know to put our name on the list of volunteers.
3. Gail asked everyone to bring 3 initiatives. Claudia and Marie both said they wanted to landscape the triangle at East St. and 355 as a welcome into Frederick City. Byron said a crosswalk at the Liberty Mart across from Monocacy Park would be an asset. Other ideas were a cleanup at the fountain area located at 7th and Motter, a sidewalk along 16 street between East St and Market St., a park cleanup with a barbecue, fundraiser with matching corp. sponsor to raise money for a laser radar gun for the police dept.
New Business:
Odd Fellows was sold 3 months ago. It is the last piece of high density in the city (zoned R16). Jerry Muir, architect for the developer, was asked to come to our Sept meeting. There will be a meeting August 29th. Gail will let us know about the time. Now would be the time to speak up and let them know of any concerns. Earl Smith stated that we should not take away the developer’s rights and is concerned about affordable housing. There are concerns about parking, traffic, and the number of units as the area is right between 2 schools and traffic is already at gridlock in that area.
Sarah will not be at our next meeting as she will be on vacation.
We adjourned at 8 p.m. as it was National Night Out and some of us wanted to attend.
Our next meeting will be Sept 6th, 2005 , 7 p.m., at North Frederick Elementary School..
Sincerely,
Claudia J. Winkelman, Secretary
