NAC 6 Minutes 8/16/04
Present: Corporal Bourke, Sara McGill, Paul Dienes, Katherine Jones, Gwen Messer, Corporal Bowman, Sergeant Rocca
We discussed requesting officers be assigned to the neighborhood for speed enforcement around peak hours, as determined through our recent experiment with the traffic signs.
3 neighbors from Fairview sent Ms. Messer to express concerns about a parking problem in their neighborhood. They live right next to Hood College. As they arrive home at night, they find it very difficult to find parking anywhere near their home, because Hood College students going to night classes have parked all along the street. Their concern is that these students have free parking on campus, and do not need to park on the neighborhood streets, and they wanted someone to address the problem. We discussed some options. And asked Ms. Messer to bring more neighbors to our next meeting to discuss the matter some more.
Someone raised the fact that the city charter deals with how the city will use stop signs, and we may need to seek a change in the city charter in order to get the signage in NAC 6 changed to reduce speeding.
The officers present explained that it is Standard Operating Procedure of the city police not to ticket anyone for speeding until they exceed the speed limit by 10 mph. They also acknowledged that it takes a car going 25 mph 33 feet to come to a complete stop.
We discussed Make a Difference Day, a day for cleaning up the neighborhood parks.
