Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
What is GIS?

A Geographic Information System, or GIS, is comprised of hardware, software, and data that work together to allow for collection, maintenance, display, and distribution of geographic data. GIS allows people to better understand very large and complex datasets - making decisions based on the analysis and visualization of this data. Having a reliable central repository for geographic information improves efficiency of government and helps to ensure that informed decisions are made. To learn more about GIS please visit ESRI's website.

City of Frederick GIS

The City of Frederick operates a central GIS Department that provides services to all City Departments as well as citizens. This department is responsible for the full cycle of GIS from the collection and maintenance of data to map production and data distribution through custom applications. The GIS Department helps the City to provide municipal services more efficiently while saving time, money, and resources.

The GIS Department has a number of ready to go products that are available to both City Departments and the public. These include printable map documents (pdf format) and custom interactive mapping applications available over the internet. Links to these products are available along the left side bar or below.
