The City of
Minutes
January 19th, 2006
Third floor conference room - 4:30 p.m.
Present: Cindy Small,
Debbie Bostian, Steve Martin, George Yourick, Beverley Tuggle, Denise
Fargo-Devine, Jarrell Cook, Buck Browning, William Chaney, David Markoe, Bonnie
Borsa, Maria Whittemore, Donna Kuzemchak Ramsburg, Eileen Farrar
Cindy Small opened the meeting and introductions were made.
The minutes from the meeting of November 11th, 2006 were
approved and corrections to company name initials were changed.
Grants Update
Alderman Ramsburg stated that all of the selected approved grant
applicants had been notified of their awards.
Ms. Ramsburg also explained that one grant application was lost in the
process and thought it fair to allow that applicant to appear before the
Commission. Mr. Buck Browning, area
director for Boys and Girls Clubs of Washington County, along with Mr. William
Chaney of the
Mayor Holtzinger’s
Vision
Alderman Ramsburg spoke to the Commission regarding New Mayor Holtzinger’s
vision for how the Education Commission could be a better advocate for the
children of the City of
Committee Structure
A lengthy Discussion was held regarding the possible formation of sub
committees that would be formed to include the recruitment of people to attend
other meetings and do research regarding the creation of a youth center and
regional park in the City. Ms. Debbie Bostian suggested to the commission the
possibility of breaking up into four sub committees; one for planning; one for
parks; advocacy; and grants would be a part of the whole commission.
Meeting Format
Discussion was held regarding information that would be brought to each
meeting. Each person that agrees to
attend a particular meeting, such as the planning commission or parks and
recreation, would bring that information to the commission meeting. Materials such as staff reports and agendas
from the planning commission would be helpful for discussion at each meeting.
Alderman Ramsburg stated that she would bring a structure to the commission for
future meetings. Ms. Bostian stated that
she thought it best to have each item from any parties attending future
meetings bring their requests in writing so that a formal vote can be made for
the record.
Issues and Concerns
Mr. David Markoe spoke on behalf on the YMCA and issues regarding
transportation of children to schools and stated that there may be a
duplication of funds spent on other organizations that are not chartered in
Frederick county or The City of Frederick offering the same service.
The next meeting will be held on February 16th, 2006 at the
Talley Recreation Center at 4:30 p.m.
