Sec. 12-11. Food control bureau.


The board of health, in addition to its other powers and duties, is hereby constituted a food control bureau. The city health officer shall be the chief of this bureau. Upon his recommendation, the mayor may appoint, with the approval of the members of the board of aldermen, such assistants as may be deemed necessary for the purpose of carrying out the provisions of Chapter 6, and the regulations passed in pursuance thereof.
The chief of the food control bureau shall have the authority to enforce the provisions of this section and all regulations passed in pursuance thereto under the general direction of the board of health and shall have the authority to issue, suspend or revoke any and all permits required under the, provisions of the health ordinances of the city.
The chief of the food control bureau or his duly authorized agent, at any reasonable hour of the day or night, is hereby authorized to inspect the premises of any food and drink establishment in the city where food or beverages are produced, processed, stored, sold or offered for sale, manufactured, served, canned, handled or dispensed in any manner whatever. Such chief shall also have the authority to have an examination made of the health and physical fitness of all employees and attendants handling food or drink in any of the establishments hereinbefore mentioned. He is furthermore authorized to purchase samples of food or drink at any of such establishments for the purpose of making chemical and bacteriological examination thereof. (Code 1953, § 8.8)
